Queen of the Happenstance Realm

Happenstance, it is all just happenstance isn't it? This blog is used to share my thoughts about whatever silly or serious somethin' or other that's on mind- I use to update it everyday until... until... Feel free to leave comments, I love sharing ideas and IF you comment, I might start posting again. Represented are some aspects of who I am. All this together is a small piece of my life.

Why do I...

Why do I spend so much money when I go to Target or Wal-Mart? I mean, they do such a good job of carrying what I want at an awesome price. But then again, they also do a good job of charging more than I expect on stuff I need. Which brings me to my point- why can't I control my spending at these places? I don't go overboard- I buy stuff that seems logical. I know people who buy dumb stuff (like that football shaped crock pot that caught my eye that I DIDN'T BUY but sort-of wanted too). I don't buy candles, I don't buy seasonal, I don't buy toys and I don't get decorative stuff. All these things I'd like but I try to live lean, I try to only buy the essentials.

Here's my simple purchase list...
Cones for Soccer Practice $12
Whistle for Soccer Practice $3.50
Cute Black&Red Outfit for Jack for Soccer Practice $13
Cute Red Shirt to decorate for me for Soccer Practice $3
Bday presents for Nephew's Birthday $6 + $4 + $7
Socks for Kole (the boy LOVES decorative socks) $6

AND I STILL NEED A PUMP FOR THE SOCCER BALLS.

Now I'm poor and I didn't even buy anything that significant. Still I LOVE what I got. I'm so going to be ready for practice and everything I bought I can really use/get alot of use out of.

Am I the only that blows the budget when you go to the store for a few quick things (all I planned on getting was cones and the whistle)? What was the last thing you bought that wasn't on the list that made you super happy? That $3 shirt for me really did it. But all in all, anything for soccer is cool too.

I love shopping, just wish I had more cash to blow- that $50+ bill could have easily been ALOT more. Poor Captain, he didn't get ANYTHING. But last shopping trip (to Target) he did get a You Don't Know Jack Shirt (and Jack got a shirt that says Lumber Jack). See what I mean, these places know just what to sell me. It is CRAZY.

All in a Day's Work

This is my co-worker's son on the job. Makes you think huh? Here he's lost everything and still he presses on helping others. And in turn it was awesome how people came together to help this man and his wife. Someone even gave them a place to live for free for the next year- fully furnished to boot. Isn't that amazing? Makes me want to live less selflessly. There's no way I could give like that right now. But maybe some day...

I love to see good people getting the help they need to get back on their feet. My company threw a baby shower for them and they got everything they were lacking for baby #3 (he should be arriving any day).

Time Management

Okay, to respond to my sister’s comment... ;)

I have great time management skills. For example, I only go grocery shopping every other week now. We've sacrificed on quality of food for easy and fast pre-made meals. These are easy to store, last forever, and don't cost a lot of $$$.

On the keys, well I bought the hook for my key chain and now they stay attached to my purse at all times. The only problem occurs when the Captain uses them because he's not as into the habit of putting them back on my purse- no worries, it isn't a problem 99% of the time.

I have started saying no to more things, especially if they aren't related to kid/family time. AND I've even started saying no to things we just don't have time for in general EVEN IF it is for the kids/family. For example, the Cap and I are taking some time away from our martial arts (so is lil' one and he's totally cool with it). We were getting stretched too thin and something was going to give. While I love sharing Karate w/my boy and the Cap enjoys the relaxation of doing his own thing once a week- right now the time was just not there to do it well.

My BIGGEST problem is not lists (I have about 10 in my mind right now)- it is hours in the day (that and well the money to do the things I'd like, or to at least to pay for the services I don't). I have a lot of goals and I hate to not do anything 100%. Then time gets away from me- kind of like now. I need to be getting ready instead of blogging :)

Priorities, now that's my biggest issue to work on- putting the right amount of time into the things that matter. But for me, I enjoy spending time on things that may seem to others as silly- like researching Strawberry Shortcake and tracking down the perfect Sour Grapes.

MorningMadness/LunchFun

Woke up TIRED but was okay to get going in time. I have the boys ready and almost out the door UNTIL my keys were no where to be found. Man, we’ve been so much better about keeping up with our keys- how did this happen? They’re not attached to my purse (like they usually are), they are not IN my purse, not on the dresser, the kitchen counter, in the bathroom… WHAT AM I GOING TO DO? Call Captain. No answer. Call Captain’s work number… no answer. I am not good at finding things, I’m at a loss. What to do, what to do. Call Mom and see if she can pick up the kids? No, there’s no time and she’s likely busy. Keep looking, keep looking. Why isn’t Captain answering, leave a frantic message for him.

Start moving around stuff (versus just looking in the obvious places), FOUND THEM. 10 minutes later, I found them. Our faucet is leaking in the kitchen (and the bathroom but hey we’re working on one job at a time here) and everything under the sink is now on the counters and my keys were under that stuff.

Drop off Kindergartener- tell him to run. He has 1 minute before being late. He sees a friend, they chat. I honk the horn- he waves. UUUUGGHGHHGHGHGHG. I have this secret fear that I’m not cut out for Motherhood. That God made me too selfish, too scatterbrained, too whatever. To me a sign that I’m failing is getting my kid to school late, I DO NOT WANT TO GET HIM THERE LATE.

I park, I walk in, I ensure he wasn’t- he wasn’t. I ask if someone can brake a $20 bill so I can send money for lunch to my lil’ guy. The laugh. The say to go to the cafeteria and do the pay into the account thing. I don’t want to- they have to know their assigned account numbers when they have an account and my prince doesn’t have a great memory- I don’t want him to be embarrassed if he can’t recall it. I leave when no one in the cafeteria shows their face right away.

I decide to bring him lunch- I leave work and pickup McDonalds. I talk to McBunny about time management issues on the way (on the cell, yeah I know that’s bad) and she encourages me to go ahead and take some time off from Karate. I decide it would be a good idea and now I feel good about it since another Mommy agrees.

I’m at the school, I go to the cafeteria and wait. My boy is so happy to see me, I didn’t see that coming. He was all smiles and proud to be sitting with me- I didn’t see that coming either. The other kids like me… wow, life is good. I mention the idea of taking some time off from Karate and he agrees that it would be smart. WOW.

Things fall into place sometimes- thank you God.

Everything

Great weekend- first soccer games of the season, saw Dad outside of the skilled nursing home, hung out with the girls, and worked together w/friends for a good cause and the house is in decent shape...

So why do I feel like this?

Well Friday night I was with the boys while Captain played poker w/my brother (a Birthday thing). That went well, I worked hard and I got some much-needed housework done but it wore me out and I was discouraged with all that was still left.

The next morning we started our soccer season- and while my oldest son's game was AWESOME and fun- my head was KILLING me the second we arrived. My allergies are for sure reacting to what's in the air right now and I'm feeling some pain. Then we went home and rested before heading out to my first game as a coach for my 3 year old. There was confusion about the location, some of my parents beat me to the site, and the team we played were so much more advanced than us. I didn't see it coming- we did some drills during practice but we were in no way ready. Let's just say a good amount of the kiddos sat on the sidelines crying. Yeah crying. I felt awful because some of it was my fault- should have had more intense practices. I should have learned the game better. I did my best, tried to be fun and upbeat but all in all- I would say it was a pretty big let down from my perspective and I'm sure from the other parents’ perspective too. But I did work hard preparing for this- I have already put far more effort into coaching than the other 3 coaches we've dealt with but it isn't translating into me being a good coach. I'm energetic and I think the kids are starting to respond to me but I have a LONG WAY TO GO. I'm not totally discouraged but my eyes have been opened. Captain mentioned that maybe volunteering to coach wasn't the best idea. Dang, that hurt.

So moving on… got too see Dad outside of the facility he stays at. It was nice and I was glad to see him in a different environment but man am I going to turn up the prayers for him. I want my Dad back. He's aged so much and he's still trying to overcome alot- it just doesn't make sense yet- my poor Dad, my poor Mom, my poor family. The emotions I'm trying to work out on this are getting the best of me.

Girls night out- boy did I confuse this. We were going to keep this small but I made it big. Then the weather looked like it might be bad- I called it off. Got feedback that that wasn't cool. I felt bad. I wanted to go, wanted to have a good time, but I didn't want to coordinate 15 people at the last minute- are we going, are we not? I wasn't sure what to do. I made the wrong call too early. Okay plans are back on now. We call a few girls that seemed especially interested and things are falling into place. I get ready to go after a full day and I'm shaky. I'm run down. I'm not up to this. I have to be up to this. I need this- I've been wound so tight lately... I go. I check my phone on the way to the meeting place- I have a message. It’s the other "planner" - she's sick. Okay, so after going over the shortened list of people I realize I have no one to meet. Not only that- I don't want to drive out there alone. I call the other 2 girls I do know that are going- we agree to meet up. Getting directions as I'm driving... okay I'm there. There are 2 more girls to meet up with at the Bar- I hope this all goes well. I'm in charge of directions, we get a lil' off track- Captain guides us in via the cell- we're back on track. We decide to stop and eat before going in (and thus missing our reservation at the Piano Bar). No worries, the food was good (and free- I wheeled and dealed because it took AWHILE) and the drinks help me relax- it was a great transition. We go to the Bar, all 5 of us are together now and having a blast. I did need this, I feel much better, and life is good.

The next day, I'm so tired- the allergies are getting me again. Can't go to Church early to give blood like I had planned. We get there late but in time to help out for the New Member Lunch- shoot some nice pictures, had a good pep talk w/a friend/Dad of a kiddo I coach. Things are turning around. Service was awesome but we had a duckling I didn't keep good enough track of- the lil' fella kept falling under my radar- my head hurts, I'm tired, and emotionally I'm drained- everything suffers. So tension rises w/Captain as after service wrap-up begins with the lunch effort but is quickly diffused and all that was bad turns into good.

Try to double up efforts of housework while Captain is away takin’ care of stuff we/he needed to do- kids want my attention; I want a clean house- bad combination. Kids had a rough day, I had a rough day, but we're still trying to turn things around. Captain is back from him outings for the day and I'm slowing turning back into nice Mommy/Wife. Evil women has been coming out too much, I'm not sure why. There have been alot of changes; by a lot I mean a ZILLION. I'm also changing and change isn't easy for me. The changes I’m trying to implement are good but the process is hard/taxing.

We'll see.

Well I'm going to start researching more soccer stuff- I'm determined to turn things around on this commitment of mine. These kids are going to LOVE SOCCER and we're going to improve (while focusing on having fun). I'm grateful for all the activities but I have a difficult balancing it all. I need to settle on some things not being perfect but that isn't in my nature so I find myself in a state of disappointment way too often. That is yet another change I need to make.

We'll see.

I’ve been remind myself of this song way too much…
Everything To Everyone Lyrics by Everclear

You put yourself in stupid places

Yes I think you know it's true
Situations where it's easy to look down on you
I think you like to be the victim
I think you like to be in pain
I think you make yourself a victim almost every single day

You do what you do
You say what you say
You try to be everything to everyone
You know all the right people
You play all the right games
You always try to be everything to everyone

You say they taught you to read and write
Yeah they taught you how to count
I say they tought you how to buy and sell your own body by the pound
I think you like to be their simple toy
I think you love to play the clown
I think you are blind to the fact that the hand you hold is the hand that holds you down

Spin around and fall down
Do it again
You stumble and fall
Yeah why don't you ever learn
Come on now
Do that stupid dance for me

You do what you do
You say what you say
You try to be everything to everyone
You jump through the big hoop
You play all the right games
You try to be everything to everyone

I wonder if trying to be everything to everyone makes you seem like nothing to anyone? Okay, I'm being melodramatic. I'm very loved, I don't try to be a victim and I'm not a big fan of people who do. But I do feel like I stumble and I fall ALOT. I don't want to be everything to everyone but there are alot of people in my life that I care for and want to show through my actions that they are important to me. Yet there are many people I could do alot more for (my Mom, Dad, siblings...) and others that I over invest myself in for no really great reason other than I guess I get caught up. I need to remember what matters and stick to the basics. I need to matter to those that matter most. Above all I need to reconnect with God.

Okay so I haven't posted as often lately- part of it is just because the pace is picking up in all aspects of my life but also because I've been pretty negative lately and I didn't want to put all that junk out there. Still we all have our days and sharing with friends can be very therapeutic. I feel better already. Anyone else relating to what I'm going through? Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

Be nice. I'm fragile right now.

Strawberry Shortcake

WHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT?
You ordered a Sour Grapes figurine???? said my friend that is having a Strawberry Shortcake Birthday Party.

Then she admitted to looking for a SSC one too.

Just for a little background, she had each of us pick a character for the party- I chose Sour Grapes.

My other friend was cracking up about my hunt for Sour Grapes. She said her husband would just shake his head when she talked about it (that's why I didn't talk about it to mine).

Then this friend admitted to trying to find Lemon Meringue on the "official" SSC website but no luck. But now she says the challenge is on!

My sickness in infecting the world (evil laugh).

I had so much fun researching Strawberry Shortcake- the figurine I bought was purchased really reasonably and I’m guessing might even be worth more $$$ soon. I always wanted Sour Grapes and never did get to have her so it was cool to finally reach that goal- now about all the others… in time, in time.

I wish I could have gotten a doll but Sour Grapes and her pet snake we’re not as popular as the other characters and so they are not available in dolls and whatnot. There was a Raisin Cane character that I thought was cute too (related to Sour Grapes) but I couldn’t find much on her either (and I like the challenge of tracking down hard to find stuff).

This one site I found had one of a kind specially made Strawberry Shortcake Characters and they were so cute- there were no prices and I figure if you have to ask… but you could pick your theme and this lady would make one for you and it looked JUST LIKE THE REAL ONES. http://www.ozblueberry.com/CustomJane1.html

Anyway, Raisin Cane was never produced as a doll. Her character was actually introduced in the comic... but there are custom dolls being produced. Now I want one. Why? I don't collect anything. I'm not one to accumulate stuff but for some reason I like tapping into the Raisin Cane inside of me, the little girl that still just wants to play most of the day.

Reunion WrapUp

Reunions are fun. I’m happy I went- maybe not $500 happy but happy all the same. It was good seeing some familiar faces but… I think it was sad that a lot of the people were still trying so hard to fit in, be cool, whatever. We were taking the group picture and everyone was acting so put out by it. The guys behind me were cussing like crazy and harassing the photographer- the girls were busy trying to look indifferent and yet were smiling away and posing because deep down they wanted this picture taken. So what’s the deal? Why so much negativity? I didn’t understand the driving force of most of these people back then, and to a large extent, I don’t now. So there I was, smiling, trying to tune out the bad behavior and feeling like I wanted to get out of there ASAP.

It made me happy that I grew up and sad that more people didn’t. The first night everyone was open to having a good time and it seemed like “real” personalities were coming through but by the second night… well it felt like we were in 8th grade again (I didn't HATE 8th grade but let's just say I was glad to move on from that time).

So anyway, you had your single people that you couldn’t believe weren’t married, your married people that you couldn’t believe were, the people w/kids and the ones without. So many different roads taken and changes all across the board. There were probably about 3 or 4 girls that looked really great and were always very pretty and there were some that were very pretty and had come a long way (that was cool to see). People had aged very differently and I suppose I was thankful that time has been pretty good to us. The funniest part of it all- the guys changed THE MOST. The unattractive ones were more attractive and the attractive ones all looked sort-of the same and not all that standout anymore.

No one really talked about what they do, mostly about where they lived but that was really the extent of it. There were a few memories here and there but we all seemed to have forgotten almost all the details of that part of our lives.

No one that I thought would remember the Captain and I as a couple together seemed to (give or take a few folks) and I was reminded of just how not into the social scene I was back then. I mean I knew people, got along with most of them, and I think was generally accepted but I didn’t want to be close to them or should I say I never shared much in common with most of them. So many of them seemed mean, misguided, or just terribly shallow. I’m not trying to judge them but I just feel like there is a side to a lot of my classmates that isn’t very nice. Maybe it is a defense thing or something?

I’m just glad to be in my real life again. It is nice to be away from the pressures of that many peers constantly fighting for pecking order or whatever. The people I know now are kind, loving and nice (during my time in school I really didn’t know there were many “nice” people out there). I guess maybe one of the reasons I’m so connected with the people in my life is due to the fact that they are mostly Christians- thank God. That commonality makes all the difference. Life is all about choices, I’m glad the choices are more varied at this stage.

Life is good.

Reunion Night 2- 8.0 Closing

Reunion Night 2- RoundTable

I think people were getting a lil' sick of their pictures being taken. I found it entertaining. I wanted to take more pictures of the people in the crowd but then I kind-of knew that by the next day none of them would likely matter much so I didn't. It was cool hangin' out with my sister and a few old friends but all in all- no life changing experiences (but I did get some great pictures).

Coaching

What have I done? Did I really think I am up to this? Just kidding BUT coaching 3 year olds is really going to be a challenge. We had our first meeting/mini-practice yesterday and well it opened my eyes. First of all, I taught dance before so I thought this would be easy. But dance is one thing and soccer is another. In dance the kids are in a confined space INDOORS. There are no distractions, nothing for them to do but listen to you. That and there are no parents around, kids tend to behave better when their parents aren’t around (mine included). Now we’re outdoors and I’m totally outnumbered.

There’s this one Mom that seems really great I’m afraid she would likely be a lot better suited for this- she’s coached lil’ ones before AND she has actually played soccer (8 years). I hope she’s not regretting being on my team.

I hope I get less nervous, I was totally scatterbrained. I rehearsed everything in my head and I think I just got too excited about it, my expectations were really high. Oh well, I’ve got a lot of energy and this is for my kiddo (I hope he remembers and appreciates this one day).

I know if I just do my best, things will fall into place but this may be one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever undertaken. I totally underestimated the commitment.

So now for the good, the parents seem nice (2 Mommies I already know and love) and the kids are adorable. I can’t wait to see them in their lil’ uniforms running down the field/playing with the ants. Everyone seems pretty easy going so I know I can relax (in fact I think I should). We’ll focus on drills and I’ll get people involved and all will be well. I’ve got a strategy so hopefully we’ll get into a rhythm.

Hair

Now, what about my hair for the reunion weekend? Flat, curly, big or a mixture of both? Bangs across, swept to one side or clipped back? Wispy or piecey or neither? One night do it one way and the other night another? HELP.

Contacts or glasses (remember my contacts are green)? Disregard the strand that got away in the first picture.

Nervous

Okay so I WAS feeling great about the outfits I bought for the 2 class reunion events we're going to THIS weekend but...

a friend pointed out that wearing the same color of shirt to both might not be a good idea. I tried to argue the point and ended up making the same point. Both shirts billow down the front, they both have dropped waists... one is silkier material and is a halter and the other has straps that come closer together in back but besides that they are pretty similar...

The pants I got and loved were hemmed and still are cute but they are itchy and maybe I'm having a fat day but I thought they looked better on (oh well, I'll deal). I can wear them with another lighter shirt I have but I'll have to buy a cute belt to wear because the belt loops will show with this shirt. I'm running out of time but can probably find time to get a few accessories (I wanted to anyway). But even though the lighter shirt is pretty complimentary on- it is a lil' more conservative than I wanted and it isn't new (doesn't have that new feeling).

What to do? The skirt outfit was for the bar thing on Friday night and the pants were for the more formal event on Saturday. I can substitute the skirt for some of my fav jeans but I really wanted to wear the skirt and the new pants since I bought them special for this weekend.

Look at the pictures and PLEASE give me some advice. Don't say anything too bad, it will run through my mind the whole time but I could use your input. I took pics in two different ways to give the best idea though the lighter color shirt is much cuter on and the others are more flattering and attractive than they look here but you get the gist.

The 40 Year Old Virgin

I'm a virgin. I always have been (says the main character). And the scene with the hot drunk chick... But the best was the waxing, dang that waxing.

This cast was amazing; everyone brought something different to the plate.

One guy we really like, Paul Rudd, from Anchorman was in it and was very good. He was also in this obscure movie we saw called The Shape of Things. JustinTime, I told you about this movie because it was so odd and disturbing- where he was this girl's "project" and she was so cruel and wrong to him. The cruel girl was Rachel Weisz, she's someone I love to watch in movies (she was not in this movie but is worth mentioning).

Romany Malco was really great. I haven't seen him in a thing but I know I will- very funny guy.

Catherine Keener, famous to me from Being John Malkovich,
is such a cool chick and is in her mid-40s. I guess there's hope that aging isn't the worst thing in the world.

Saw this movie with McBunny, Regener, and Jennifer. We went on a whim and it was really fun. They guys were nice enough to stay behind with the kiddos. Thanks fellas (and sorry you missed a very funny movie).

The only downfall- I'm in my late twenties and not my teens. It is really taking place in a world that I don't see much of anymore and honestly, it is a lil' hard to digest even though the humor is so right on. I just wish The Office was still on because I want to see more of Steve Carell in a more PG way. The site I went to (IMDB) said The Office is "In Production" so maybe there's hope it will return. If that came back along with new episodes of Lost- life would be perfect.

Bush Bashing

This picture speaks volumes, got it from NLP.

This article says more.. I got it from the MSNBC site and I thought you might find an edited version interesting.

How could the president of the United States could have even less situational awareness than the average American about the worst natural disaster in a century—is one of the more perplexing and troubling chapters in a story that, despite moments of heroism and acts of great generosity, ranks as a national disgrace.

Bush can be petulant about dissent; he equates disagreement with disloyalty. After five years in office, he is surrounded largely by people who agree with him. Bush can ask tough questions, but it's mostly a one-way street. When Hurricane Katrina struck, it appears there was no one to tell President Bush the plain truth: that the state and local governments had been overwhelmed, that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was not up to the job and that the military, the only institution with the resources to cope, couldn't act without a declaration from the president overriding all other authority.

The war in Iraq was a failure of intelligence. The government's response to Katrina—like the failure to anticipate that terrorists would fly into buildings on 9/11—was a failure of imagination.

Congressional investigations will take months to sort out who is to blame. A NEWSWEEK reconstruction of the government's response to the storm shows how Bush's leadership style and the bureaucratic culture combined to produce a disaster within a disaster.

Ray Nagin, the mayor of New Orleans, didn't want to evacuate. New Orleanians have a fatalistic streak; their joyful, jazz-blowing street funeral processions are legendary. During Nagin's mayoral campaign, the promises were about jobs, not stronger floodwalls and levees.

Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, a motherly but steely figure known by the nickname Queen Bee, spoke to Bush. "Mr. President," she said, "we need your help. We need everything you've got."

There are a number of steps Bush could have taken, short of a full-scale federal takeover, like ordering the military to take over the pitiful and (by now) largely broken emergency communications system throughout the region. But the president, who was in San Diego preparing to give a speech the next day on the war in Iraq, went to bed.

By the predawn hours, most state and federal officials finally realized that the 17th Street Canal levee had been breached, and that the city was in serious trouble. Bush was told at 5 a.m. Pacific Coast time and cut his vacation short. Bush blithely proceeded with the rest of his schedule for the day, accepting a gift guitar at one event and pretending to riff like Tom Cruise in "Risky Business."

The radio was reporting water nine feet deep at the corner of Napoleon and St. Charles streets. The looting and occasional shooting had begun.

At emergency headquarters in Baton Rouge, confusion raged. Though more than 100,000 of its residents had no way to get out of the city on their own, New Orleans had no real evacuation plan, save to tell people to go to the Superdome and wait for buses. On Tuesday, the state was rounding up buses; no, FEMA was; no, FEMA's buses would take too long to get there ... and so on.

Early Wednesday morning, Blanco tried to call Bush. She was transferred around the White House for a while until she ended up on the phone with Fran Townsend, the president's Homeland Security adviser, who tried to reassure her but did not have many specifics. Hours later, Blanco called back and insisted on speaking to the president.

The Pentagon was not sitting idly. By Tuesday morning (and even before the storm) the military was moving supplies, ships, boats, helicopters and troops toward the Gulf Coast. But, ironically, the scale of the effort slowed it— it took at least two days and usually four and five to get them into the disaster area. Looters and well-armed gangs, like TV crews, moved faster.

The president, could have invoked the Insurrections Act, the so-called Riot Act. But Rumsfeld's aides say the secretary of Defense was leery of sending in 19-year-old soldiers trained to shoot people in combat to play policemen in an American city, and he believed that National Guardsmen trained as MPs were on the way.

The one federal agency that is supposed to handle disasters—FEMA—was dysfunctional. FEMA had improved in the 1990s in the Clinton administration. But it became a victim of the Iron Law of Unintended Consequences. After 9/11 raised the profile of disaster response, FEMA was folded into the sprawling Department of Homeland Security and effectively weakened. FEMA's boss quit when he lost his cabinet seat and replaced himself with his college buddy Mike Brown, whose last private-sector job (omitted from his official resume) had been supervising horse-show judges for the International Arabian Horse Association. After praising Brown ("Brownie, you're doing a heck of job"), Bush last week removed him from honchoing the Katrina relief operation. He was replaced by Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad Allen. The Coast Guard was one agency that performed well, rescuing thousands.

Bad news rarely flows up in bureaucracies. For most of those first few days, Bush was hearing what a good job the Feds were doing. Bush likes "metrics," numbers to measure performance, so the bureaucrats gave him reassuring statistics. At a press availability on Wednesday, Bush duly rattled them off: there were 400 trucks transporting 5.4 million meals and 13.4 million liters of water along with 3.4 million pounds of ice. Yet it was obvious to anyone watching TV that New Orleans had turned into a Third World hellhole.

Late last week, Bush was, by some accounts, down and angry. But another Bush aide described the atmosphere inside the White House as "strangely surreal and almost detached." At one meeting described by this insider, officials were oddly self-congratulatory, perhaps in an effort to buck each other up. Life inside a bunker can be strange, especially in defeat.

Team Names

I am coaching a soccer team for 3 year olds. I need to come up with a name. I'm going to ask the parents what they'd like but this is what I have "narrowed" down our team name to... (our uniforms are likely going to be black though I could see us switching to orange or maybe even green).

The... or Team...
Blast, Challengers, Kicks, Legends, Power, Spunkies, SWAT (Soccer with Attitude), Synergy, Thrashers, Wild Things, Zoom

Friends, Goblins, Jackals, Kangaroos, Firecrackers, Titans (can't you hear it now- go Team Titans)

Tigers, Troopers, Jedi Knights, Force, Galaxy, Lightning, Storm, Firecrackers

Love Win Its but the Captain didn't think it was a good idea : (

What do you think?

Bush

I've heard that Bush wasn't doing enough but this is ridiculous...

Gatorade

My Kids LOVE Gatorade and ask for it all the time. I started wondering why it was such a favorite of theirs. Was it the name GATORade? What an odd name.

Then today a coworker brought up gatorade and I remarked that it has an odd name. He mentioned that it was originally formulated for the University of Florida, for their football team.

Wow, interesting. But is it true? So I decided to research it. Thought this was pretty cool info.

September 1965: Four doctors at the University of Florida seize on a formula to solve a serious problem for the school’s football team, the Gators: dehydration.

October 2, 1965: The drink gets a second test in 100 degree heat- the Gators win, 14-7.

November 1965: Jim Free comes up with the perfect name for the lemonade the Gators drink (it was Cade's Cola).

July 1, 1968: Sports Illustrated features a six-and-half page story singing Gatorade’s praises, backed with statistics. Before long, Arthur Ashe and Elvis Presley are among the sports drink’s high-profile loyal guzzlers..

October 25, 1968: The Associated Press discloses the details of lapses in regulation of research that had allowed Gatorade to slip through the hands of the University of Florida, 4 years later the University of Florida receives a 20 percent share of Gatorade’s royalties.

1983: Quaker Oats acquires Stokely Van-Camp for $220 million. After selling off everything but Pork & Beans and Gatorade, the net price of the acquisition is $95 million.

1985: The crowd-pleasing tradition of the Gatorade bath is born, when New York Giants nose guard Jim Burt, in an act of revenge, pours a cooler full of the drink on his coach, Bill Parcells.

2001: Quaker merges with PepsiCo and 4 years later in 2005 Gatorade celebrates the 40th anniversary of its invention. Now available in more than 30 flavors, including the original lemon-lime, the world’s leading sports drink is sold in more over 50 countries, with gross retail sales surpassing $3 billion in the United States alone.
