Queen of the Happenstance Realm

Happenstance, it is all just happenstance isn't it? This blog is used to share my thoughts about whatever silly or serious somethin' or other that's on mind- I use to update it everyday until... until... Feel free to leave comments, I love sharing ideas and IF you comment, I might start posting again. Represented are some aspects of who I am. All this together is a small piece of my life.

Christmas Letter

The Christmas letter topic can tend to be a little controversial. You may laugh but it is true. Just think about the history…

There was a time when one's Christmas letter had to be hand written. It would be addressed to the individual and pertinent to how you related to that person- personal if you knew them well, vague and upbeat is you didn't- etc. These were great to receive; being added to one's Christmas list was somewhat of a compliment- you were someone special to be included because of the effort and energy that goes into it.

Then the typewriter came along. It sped things up. Letters could be longer now, so perhaps they were more interesting and personal but a little less impressive due to the fact that it was perceived as making Christmas letters more readily available to the masses.

Then the personal PC came along- WOW, people had fun with this. I remember my first mailing was in mass. I created form letters to individuals and families with fields and everything. I was learning all about this in my computer classes in school so I thought I'd give it a try in real life- the letter was lacking, errors were made, and I'm sure I came off looking a little silly but that was me at age twelve.

Years have come and gone, I've sent letters and I've sent cards- I like to do pictures and they are often in different formats. I believe my form letter has evolved; now I add humor and clipart so hopefully it is interesting (but I suppose it is up to the reader). Now I'm deciding what to do this year- any suggestions? I find people have strong opinions- my advice is not to get too personal and too detailed. My pet-peeve is when people try to lend impressions that are not accurate or get too braggy. What about you?

I was just thinking about this last night...wondering what I was going to do. I think Christmas letters, especially if you have kids, should be somewhat personal if you have kids...that way you can keep every one up to date on how things are going. I am doing Christmas cards and I will write in them. It will take more time, but I think it is worth it. :)

Well I finished our letter. It isn't really very funny this year but it hasn't been a very funny year to speak of so... I think it is okay. I hope next year it can be lighter.

Now I can't decide what to do for a picture. I LOVE the pictures people send and I even post them on my refrigerator. The super Christmas looking ones come down after the holidays for the most part but if there's room, you get a spot for the whole year.

I am debating on getting a greeting card picture thing made again- last year I took like 3 or 4 pictures and had different ones made up. It worked out well but finding/taking the perfect picture was challenging. The cost isn’t bad (I get them done at Wal-Mart but I may just opt for a snapshot insert. An alternative is taking a collage of all the pictures I have of the year and doing it on 8 1/2 x 11 photo quality paper. Pictures speak alot right? People love visuals so it might be neat. Hmmm... While the collage wouldn't be too difficult, I haven't really messed with my picture software in regards to cropping so there might be a learning curve to consider.

Decisions decisions.
