Controversial U.S. Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers has withdrawn her nomination after weeks of criticism over her qualifications for the role.

Miers said in a statement her nomination "would create a burden for the White House and our staff that is not in the best interest of the country."

President George W. Bush has "reluctantly" accepted her letter of withdrawal, White House officials said.

Miers, who most recently served as Bush's White House counsel, was nominated less than a month ago to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

But she has been widely criticized since her nomination, notably by some conservatives who said she lacked the necessary legal credentials and a record of conservative judicial philosophy on issues such as abortion and affirmative action.

Others accused Bush of cronyism.

Bush blamed her withdrawal on Senate pressure on the White House to release internal documents concerning Miers.

"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House – disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said.

Miers also noted efforts by the Senate to retrieve White House records. "I have been informed repeatedly that in lieu of records, I would be expected to testify about my service in the White House to demonstrate my experience and judicial philosophy," she said in the statement.
"While I believe that my lengthy career provides sufficient evidence for consideration of my nomination, I am convinced the efforts to obtain executive branch materials and information will continue."

I would hope that Bush wanted to appoint this nominee because she promised him she'd overturn Roe vs. Wade but I doubt it, I HIGHLY DOUBT IT.

I think Bush knew she didn't have a background that anyone could hold against her (so he thought, no background is worse I guess). He thought that because she’s a women, people would take it easy on her (we was WRONG).

I think he was being plain ole’ lazy AND AROGANT (what’s new).

Seems to me he looked around and said- hey, you’re a lawyer right? Want a job as a judge? If I give it to you then we’ll be even right and you’ll continue being loyal to me right?

Bush is not a man of his word. He wanted people to trust him on this one and THEY DIDN’T. His own party DIDN’T. And you know what- they shouldn’t. He also said he’d be fiscally responsible AND not enter into a War without a clear cut exit strategy so... there you go.

Wonder who will be up on the block next?

OOOH, good post. I, however, I am no where NEAR qualified to make an well informed, well argued post. I don't get into politics...and really don't have a leg to stand on to defend or bash the President. Politics has never been a big topic of discussion for me, it was rarely talked about in our home growing up, and it is NEVER discussed when our family gets together. I am not saying that is right or wrong...that is just the way it is. I respect your opinion and think it's cool that you keep up with it though. I don't think there will ever be a good President, one that every one agrees with. I think President Bush is a spiritual man, and that suffices for me. He was elected into office and immediately had to deal with 9/11...I shudder at the thought of Al Gore or John Kerry having to lead our country in ANY crisis. I honestly believe that Bush seeks the Lord's way, or at least he used to. Some how, that has always been enough for me. I know, I know...I live in this free country and it is almost my obligation to keep up with the political points...but I can't do it when every where I turn, our government (courts) are fighting to keep God OUT of our country. It truly baffles me. I am SO thankful for our troops, for their sacrifices that they make so that I can have this opinion. They are the real heroes. Good post Krit.

Ohh Pixie, where do I start?

"He was elected into office and immediately had to deal with 9/11...I shudder at the thought of Al Gore or John Kerry having to lead our country in ANY crisis."

Dubya ignored all the warnings about 9/11, including a report that in August of 2001 that stated that Al-Qaeda was determined to use commercial airliners to crash into buildings. Al Gore along with Bill Clinton kept us safe for 8 years. Dubya allowed us to get attacked in his first year as being president.

"I honestly believe that Bush seeks the Lord's way..."

See my blog for Dubya's "One Finger Salute".

"...but I can't do it when every where I turn, our government (courts) are fighting to keep God OUT of our country. It truly baffles me..."

Religion & Government should be kept separate to allow ALL USA citizens the right to worship or not to worship whomever they please.

I'm not trying to pick on you, just enlighten you a little and hopefully inspire you to do a little more research on this president and how he has been leading us down the wrong path for the last 5 years. Today a member of his administration was indicted and his right hand man Rove will continue to be investigated. Bush hides behind his smokescreen of "born again" and "pro-life" rhetoric when he is really only a greedy, pro-corporation, arrogant person that only believes in the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Obviously I'm not a Republican, but I'm not a bleeding heart liberal either. I'm a moderate Democrat that believes that you are only as strong as your weakest link. This administration believes that only the strong shall survive, which means rob from the poor (high gas prices, high energy costs, high health care, etc.) and give to the rich (no bid contracts to Cheney's Halliburton, tax breaks to ExxonMobil, who just posted the largest profit EVER, tax breaks to the wealthy, the list goes on & on).

I have to say I totally agree with NLP on ALL accounts but Pixie I know where you're coming from- I want to think the same way about Bush. It is easier to assume he has our best intentions in mind.

I can't judge his heart but I do think the no litmus test thing on appointing a judge and then leaking his appointees’ strong Christian affiliation shows that he isn't 100% committed to ensuring we as a country follow God’s commands. Because if abortion was truly something he wanted to end (if he does feel it is murder), litmus test or not- the only way to end it is through the courts and IF we can get enough judges to overturn the previous cases on the matter.

I'm a route for the home team girl, a support the person in office person but Bush worked hard to lose my respect and now I do feel sorry for those soldiers because it was a War fought based on lies from Bush and his administration.

All right!!!!!!!! Get off my back DUDE (NLP). Like I said, I don't have a "LEG TO STAND ON TO EITHER DEFEND OR BASH THE PRESIDENT" I just got a little long winded when explaining my opinions...and that is what they are, my opinions on how I felt about 9/11. I didn't quote any news articles, and I wasn't trying to convince people that I was right...i was just stating my OPINION. Chill out NLP...this is why I don't talk politics. :)
